Truss Tomatoes
United Nurseries in the Spring 09 are happy to present two new varieties of great tasting truss vine tomato that the home gardener can now grow with ease, fresh from the garden.
Tomato Truss Cupid
Tomato Cupid truss tomato fruit size and shape is that of a strawberry and has the appearance of a row of hearts. Tomato Cupid is a winner of taste-buds, with its sweet and flavoursome taste. In the past this deep red, gourmet tomato variety was exclusive to commercial growers to provide for vegetable retailers, but now is available for the home gardener. Ideal fresh or in any dish where flavour and presentation are important.
Tomato Truss Gourmet
The Gourmet tomato has undergone extensive trials at United Nurseries Tasmania to ensure that the tomato lives up to its reputation. Gourmet had a good mid season set, of even medium fruit on strong truss formation. Gourmet ripens well on the vine with real Tomato flavour. For best results Gourmet truss tomato requires strong staking and may benefit from truss ends removing to prevent over yield.
After trials and recommendations, United Nurseries feel confident that the consumer will have a satisfactory outcome with the trusted Gourmet truss Tomato. The Gourmet has been bred for resistance to Verticillium, Mosaic virus and Fusarium.
Hints on Vine Truss Tomato storage
With vine truss tomatoes the grower will notice that the first fruit on the branch ripens first and then progressive fruit ripens down the branch. The fruit will require a slight colour tinge, a change from the green stage before picking, to progress with ripening. The fruits may be picked separately and the remainder left on the vine to continue towards ripening stage.
Tomatoes taste best at room temperature. Tomato fruit will continue to ripen after picking, due to temperature, not sunlight. Do not crowd, place in a single layer is best.
